Effective communication and influencing skills are vitally important for in-house lawyers. Those that get it right are seen as highly valuable, trusted internal advisors, are involved early in planning and strategy and have a genuine “seat at the table”. They build great relationships and levels of respect within their organisations, and great careers as a result.
ACLA in conjunction with Influence Consulting have developed a series of inflluencing skills workshops designed specifically for in-house lawyers. These workshops will help you develop a communication style that involves the right mix of business knowledge and commercial pragmatism, to deliver advice that is sound, commercially and legally accurate, and enables rather than impedes the actions of internal stakeholders and customers.
This senior-level workshop is suitable for the senior in-house lawyer in a management role, particularly looking to be more influential within the business.
Briefing the Board – How to be Heard, Understood and Respected by Your Most Senior Stakeholders
Dealing with senior business people poses very specific communication challenges for senior lawyers in organisations.
Senior lawyers are sometimes excluded from strategic decisions and involved late in the piece. The business sometimes regards the legal function as risk-averse or a block on getting things done.
This small group workshop (maximum 8 participants) examines advanced communication skills to help participants, already highly regarded lawyers, to become valued senior business advisers in their own right.
Learning Outcomes:
• Build on your existing skills to influence senior business people
• Steps to take a more proactive approach to your relationship with the business
• Convey a positive personal presence when face-to-face with senior management
• Convey bad news to stakeholders whilst keeping the relationship intact
• Discuss the legal function in a way that grows and deepens relationships with key stakeholders.
