Influencing Skills Workshop Series - workshop 1 only - Melbourne

Effective communication and influencing skills are vitally important for in-house lawyers. Those that get it right are seen as highly valuable, trusted internal advisors, are involved early in planning and strategy and have a genuine “seat at the table”. They build great relationships and levels of respect within their organisations, and great careers as a result.

ACLA in conjunction with Influence Consulting have developed a series of workshops designed specifically for in-house lawyers. These workshops will help you develop a communication style that involves the right mix of business knowledge and commercial pragmatism, to deliver advice that is sound, commercially and legally accurate, and enables rather than impedes the actions of internal stakeholders and customers.

    Suitable for:

    • In-house lawyers with 1-7 years in-house experience
    • In-house lawyers with sound technical skills who would like to focus on building relationships and networks within their organisation.

Workshop 1: Clarity, Confidence and Conviction – The Three Cs Essential for an Effective In-house Counsel

This hands-on workshop will introduce a range of skills to help you get better outcomes from key communication challenges. Using case studies and practical exercises, participants will
    • Understand the mechanics of developing strong relationships
    • Learn how to confidently express an opinion or alternative point of view when face-to-face with senior colleagues and stakeholders
    • Develop skills to explore the broader business context and demonstrate sound business acumen.

    Learning Outcomes:
    • Learn how to convey confidence and conviction when communicating with key stakeholders
    • Develop skills to understand the broader business drivers of your organisation to ensure you are giving relevant advice
    • Learn how to speak plainly and give pragmatic advice
    • Learn how to be succinct and get to the point
    • Apply a framework to effectively assess a situation and its implications before moving on to consider the possible options.
